For his fifth album, East of Eden (Caballo Negro, June 11th), J Hacha De Zola leaves behind the “urban junkyard” of his previous work for a cleaner, more soulful sound — and a sharp white suit to match.
“This record is unlike any other I’ve made,” says the Jersey City artist. “I focused on what was best for each song, keeping things simple instead of overindulging in tangents.”
The album builds on the universe of his earlier releases, from the all-Spanish Syn Illusión to UnPOPular, while exploring new territory. Influenced by classic vocal groups from the 1950s and 60s like The Temptations and The Four Seasons, Hacha De Zola places his voice at the center – a challenge that reveals a newfound confidence.
Tracks like “Lost Space” and “Which Way” showcase a mature, introspective artist who has truly found his voice. The title East of Eden reflects themes of exile and division, inspired by biblical imagery and the uncertainty of modern times.
